Meridian – The project that will widen Meridian Road to five-lanes and shift through-city traffic from Main Street will bring new impacts to the traveling public in the coming days. An intersection closure at Meridian Road and Pine Avenue will be in place this weekend, while construction will begin next Tuesday at the intersections of Meridian Road and Cherry Lane, and Main Street and Fairview Avenue, bringing major impacts to traffic through September.
Upcoming Work on Meridian Split Corridor Project to Bring Traffic Impacts to Heavily Traveled Intersections
Weekend Closure at Meridian and Pine Intersection
Beginning approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, February 22, the Meridian Road and Pine Avenue intersection will be closed for the weekend to allow the contractor to cross the intersection with sewer and storm drain pipe, as part of the extensive Meridian Public Works Sewer and Water project being done in conjunction with the road project. The intersection will re-open in the early morning hours of Monday, February 25.
During the weekend closure, vehicles traveling east or west may take Franklin Road or Cherry Lane/Fairview Avenue as alternate routes.
Intersection Work Begins Tuesday, February 26: Traffic Delays Ahead
Work to reconstruct the Meridian/Cherry and Main/Fairview intersections will get underway on Tuesday (February 26) and will continue through September. Motorists should expect major delays due to necessary lane closures and a signal timing plan that will allow for left turns to remain during construction, but will significantly reduce the number of vehicles that can pass through the intersection at once.
ACHD traffic engineers have created special morning, afternoon and evening signal timing plans and will monitor traffic flow in the area. Adjustments to area traffic signals will be made where possible; however backups and delays are unavoidable under such conditions.
Crews will put the traffic changes in place overnight on Monday, February 25, shifting traffic lanes to the south side of the road. Lane closures and the adjusted traffic signal timing will be in place for the Tuesday morning commute.
Detour options during the seven-month-long intersection work include Pine Avenue, Franklin Road and Ustick Road. Businesses closest to the north and south ends of the project may still be accessed from Franklin or Cherry; those within the closure can be reached by alternate accesses established for the project. A map of business construction accesses is available at www.meridiansplitcorridor.org.
While intersection work is underway, crews will also begin to construct Meridian Road between Cherry Lane and Pine Avenue to its new configuration.
About the Projects
Since early November, Meridian Road has been closed between Pine Avenue, to just south of the Meridian and Cherry intersection.
The $8 million construction project began in late October 2012 and is scheduled for completion in mid-October 2013; however the contract gives the general contractor a bonus for early completion, making it possible the project will be finished earlier.
