Work Begins Tonight on Two Busy Meridian Intersections; to Bring Significant Traffic Delays

Meridian – Crews will begin work tonight to close and shift traffic lanes in preparation for the seven-month-long intersection work at Meridian Road and Cherry Lane, and Main Street and Fairview Avenue.

The intersection reconstruction work is part of the Meridian Split Corridor, Phase 2 project and is anticipated to continue through September, while the overall project is planned for completion in October.

Beginning Tuesday (February 26) morning, drivers should anticipate significant traffic delays at the two intersections due to necessary lane closures and signal timing plans that will allow for left turns to remain during construction, but will greatly reduce the number of vehicles that can pass through the intersection at once. One lane in each direction will be open at the intersections and designated turn lanes will be combined with through travel lanes.

ACHD traffic engineers have created special morning, afternoon and evening signal timing plans, and will monitor traffic flow in the area. Adjustments to area traffic signals will be made where possible; however backups and delays are unavoidable under such conditions.

Detour options during the intersection work include Pine Avenue, Franklin Road and Ustick Road. Businesses closest to the north and south ends of the project may still be accessed from Franklin or Cherry; those within the closure can be reached by alternate accesses established for the project. A map of business construction accesses is available at www.meridiansplitcorridor.org.

While intersection work is underway, crews will also begin to construct Meridian Road between Cherry Lane and Pine Avenue to its new configuration.

About the Projects

Since early November, Meridian Road has been closed between Pine Avenue, to just south of the Meridian and Cherry intersection.

The $8 million construction project began in late October 2012 and is scheduled for completion in mid-October 2013; however the contract gives the general contractor a bonus for early completion, making it possible the project will be finished earlier.

Project Description

  • Construct a cross-over roadway, connecting Main Street to Meridian Road, north of Franklin Road and south of the railroad crossing
  • Meridian Road will be widened to five-lanes, from the cross-over roadway, north to the Meridian/Cherry-Fairview intersection
  • Main/Fairview and Meridian/Cherry intersections will be rebuilt
  • Install new Meridian Public Works water and sewer lines
