Meridian – A closure of the Meridian Road and Pine Avenue intersection will begin this Friday (March 22) as part of the Meridian Split Corridor Phase 2 project. Crews will close the intersection at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday and will re-open it before the early morning commute on Monday, April 1. Crews will work until approximately midnight on Friday, though no additional night work is expected during the closure.
Crews will work within the intersection to install storm drain and irrigation crossings. Utility companies will also install services and crews will work to build the new road base and pave a portion of the intersection. Closing the intersection will allow crews to work faster to accomplish the heavy work load and will make for safer conditions for crews and the traveling public.
During the closure, vehicles will be detoured to Franklin Road. Those who live near the intersection will be able to access their homes via Pine from the east or west, but will not be able to pass through the intersection.
To access businesses near the Meridian and Pine intersection, vehicles may use Broadway Avenue to Northwest 1st Street – thru traffic is currently closed on Broadway Avenue at Meridian Road; however during the closure at Meridian and Pine, Broadway will be temporarily re-opened to accommodate business access.
Businesses closest to the north and south ends of the project can still be accessed from Franklin or Cherry; those within the closure can be reached by alternate accesses established for the project. A map of business construction accesses is available at www.meridiansplitcorridor.org.
Once the intersection re-opens on Monday, no additional closures of Pine Avenue are anticipated through the remainder of the project; however crews will continue work along Pine and at the intersection to construct new curb and gutter.
About the Road, Sewer and Water Projects
As part of the Meridian Split Corridor Phase 2 project and Meridian Public Works Sewer and Water project, Meridian Road is currently closed between Bower Street to just south of the Meridian and Cherry intersection.
The $8 million construction project began in late October 2012 and is scheduled for completion in mid-October 2013; however the contract gives the general contractor a bonus for early completion, making it possible the project will be finished earlier.
- Construct a cross-over roadway, connecting Main Street to Meridian Road, north of Franklin Road and south of the railroad crossing
- Meridian Road will be widened to five-lanes, from the cross-over roadway, north to the Meridian/Cherry-Fairview intersection
- Main/Fairview and Meridian/Cherry intersections will be rebuilt
- Install new Meridian Public Works water and sewer lines
