Fallen boulder closes portion of Warm Springs Avenue

Boise - At approximately 3:15 this morning, a large boulder from the Warm Springs Mesa landed on Warm Springs Avenue. It was discovered by an Ada County Highway District crew member during a patrol of the area. Warm Springs Avenue between E. Startcrest Drive and E. Starview Drive will remain closed until further notice. Barricades and flaggers are in place, and a detour route will be configured later this morning.

Crews were able to use a loader to push the rock off of the road. The rock itself is approximately ten feet tall by ten feet wide by 7 feet high and weighs approximately 50 tons. The asphalt received slight damage from the boulder landing on it and will need to be repaired before the road is reopened.

There are also several other large rocks along the Mesa that are also creating some concern. A geotechnical engineer will assess the situation today to determine if these other rocks pose a threat and need to be proactively removed.
