Eagle-Amity Roundabout Named Project of the Year by Southern Idaho ASCE

The Ada County Highway District is being recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

ACHD's Eagle Road and Amity Road Roundabout Improvements project has been selected as the 2021 Project of the Year for the Southern Idaho Section's projects under $10 million.

The prestigious award recognizes the project "that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society," according to ASCE.

The Eagle Road and Amity Road Roundabout Improvements project was selected as a project that improves or has the potential to improve the quality of life of people impacted by the project, contributes to the economic development of the area, and is environmentally responsible incorporating the principles of sustainable development.

The improvements include two lanes approaching and going through the roundabout. A dedicated right-turn lane was also added to the southbound leg. Additionally, the roundabout now has a truck apron for the safe travel of larger vehicles.

The project also added a 10-foot multi-use pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as crosswalks at each leg of the intersection with two-stage pedestrian crossings.

The expanded roundabout was completed as part of the Eagle Road Widening Project, which includes construction on Eagle Road from Amity Road to Victory Road. Improvements to the roundabout were originally intended to be built with new development at the northwest corner of the Eagle and Amity intersection before the roadway was widened. When the development was delayed, ACHD chose to add the roundabout design to the project on an accelerated timeline, allowing the roadway construction to stay on schedule.

"The success of this project is due to the incredible teamwork across all divisions of ACHD," said ACHD Commission President Mary May. "From planners to project managers, from engineers to crew members, this project is just one of many examples of staff coming together and working hard to improve transportation in Ada County."

ACHD staff members will receive the award during an upcoming ASCE Southern Idaho Section meeting.
