Chip seal is a type of pavement treatment that repairs the surface of an asphalt road. Asphalt deteriorates over time due to sun, snow, rain, and normal use. The chip seal process repairs damage and protects the road with a thin layer of liquid asphalt. Chip seal extends road life by five to seven years and provides more skid resistance. It's not a replacement for paving, but it is a cost-effective way to keep roads safer and smoother for longer.

ACHD crews start preparing roads for chip sealing in early spring, as the weather allows. After the preparation in spring, the chip seal process traditionally begins after Memorial Day weekend.

Where is ACHD chip sealing this year?

This year ACHD will be chip sealing Zone 5, which spans from Highway 55 to Blacks Creek Rd, and the Boise River north to the county line. The Chip Seal season this year is scheduled to begin after the Memorial Day weekend and end in September 2024, weather permitting.

On-street parking will be impacted during each phase. Temporary "No Parking" signs will be placed in most areas. When you see these signs, it is an indication that crews will be in the area within approximately 24 to 48 hours.
