Partnering with the Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO)

People picking up trash on roadwayIn April of 1998, ACHD and ACSO began partnering for the Labor Detail Program to reduce the number of weeds along Ada County roadways. Each year more than  120 miles of roadway and shoulders are cleared, over 1,700 alley blocks are cleaned, and over 1,700 cubic yards of weeds and debris are hauled to the landfill. ACHD currently runs four Labor Detail crews.

By using offender labor, Ada County taxpayers are saving approximately $654,000 per year in wages. The program allows offenders to give back to the community, and ninety percent of all the weeds, tree limbs, and wood (organic debris) removed by offenders are taken to the landfill. Both ACHD and ACSO value the longstanding success of this program.

More About the Program

Crew Leaders create coordinated work plans that involve weed removal, alley cleaning, cleaning of arterial sidewalks, drainage basins, islands, work on miscellaneous right-of-way, and graffiti removal. Labor Detail crews are tasked with duties within the designated zones. They are also utilized by ACHD for other tasks including:

  • Snow and sand removal from priority sidewalks
  • Weed removal ahead of the crack sealing process
  • Chip removal from sidewalks after the chip seal season
  • Pick up of Adopt-a-Highway bags and debris
  • Respond to other hazards and safety concerns in the right-of-way
