Home MenuWinter Operations
The winter season often brings several storm events to Ada County. To ensure road safety during these storm events, we employ a diverse range of equipment and materials.
Where Snow Crews Go First
ACHD uses a priority system to determine the roads that need to be cleared first. While residential streets are important, main roads are prioritized because of higher traffic volume and safety concerns. Priority roads include:
- Arterial and collector roads
- Major intersections
- Overpasses and bridges
- Areas around hospitals and fire stations
- School and railroad crossings
- Streets with grades (steepness) over six percent
Check out our route maps for a better understanding of our priority areas during winter weather events.
What to Do After Winter Weather
While we work hard to clear snow and ice from streets, it is the responsibility of the adjacent property or business owner to keep areas and sidewalks clear in front of homes and businesses. Remember: Do not push snow into the street as this may block storm drains and endanger others.
Citizens and homeowner associations may hire contractors to plow neighborhood roads. This can help your neighborhood get cleared faster, but there are some guidelines that need to be followed. Apply for a free snow removal permit today!
