Street sweeping is an essential part of maintaining our roadways, storm drain infrastructure, and protecting downstream waterways.
Our team of street sweepers remove on average 30,000 cubic yards of debris from the roadway each year. This reduces impacts to the storm drain system and minimizes pollutant runoff to local waterways like the Boise River when it rains.
Our Broom Crew operates year-round and has different priorities depending on the season or road work in the area. To avoid trash bins in the gutter, routine street sweeping does not occur on the same day as trash collection. Street sweeping can be affected by holidays, weather, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Months | Sweeping Schedule |
---|---|
March through May | Crews sweep streets by scheduled zone and maintenance areas. The county has been divided into nine sweeping zones to maximize sweeping efficiencies. |
June through September | Brooms are essential to our Chip Seal operations. Therefore, the sweeping program is focused in the chip seal zone. Neighborhood street sweeping is reduced during this time. To learn more about the Chip Seal process, please visit our Chip Seal page. |
October through February | Crews finish sweeping chips and continue street sweeping by scheduled zone and maintenance areas. They also sweep autumn leaves as well as sand used in winter operations as weather and temperatures dictate. |
Why does ACHD use sweeping zones?
Our zone-based street sweeping method provides the structure needed to direct routine sweeping activities and improve efficiency which helps reduce stormwater runoff pollution.
